In a scathing assessment of the ruling party’s popularity, PDP chieftain Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is well aware that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would suffer a humiliating defeat in a truly transparent electoral contest.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former presidential aspirant argued that the APC’s alleged fear of full electoral transparency—specifically the electronic transmission of results via IReV—is a clear sign of their dwindling grassroots support

Olawepo-Hashim dismissed the narrative that the opposition is “dead,” questioning why the ruling party remains hesitant to embrace total transparency if they truly hold the mandate of the people.

“All the propagandists can celebrate President Tinubu as a strategist, but he is certainly not a fool,” Olawepo-Hashim stated. “He has done the polls, and he knows that in a free and fair election, the APC cannot score 20 per cent of the vote.”

He further challenged the ruling party’s confidence, noting that despite controlling 31 out of 36 states due to recent defections, the APC remains haunted by internal divisions.

The PDP chieftain’s comments come as political maneuvers for the 2027 General Elections intensify. In 2023, Tinubu was declared winner with 8.79 million votes (36.61%), narrowly defeating Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

However, Olawepo-Hashim insists the 2023 figures do not reflect the current mood of the nation. He attributed the wave of defections to the APC as “elite opportunism” rather than genuine support.
