The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is reportedly preparing to exit President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following a strict presidential directive mandating all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign.

The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, sets a firm deadline of March 31, 2026, for all ministers, special advisers, and heads of agencies to step down before participating in party primaries.

Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is widely expected to comply with the order to pursue his long-standing ambition to govern Oyo State.

The Minister had already signaled his intentions in October 2025, during a viral address where he adopted the famous “Emilokan” mantra. Speaking in Yoruba, Adelabu declared that 2027 is “his turn” to lead the Pacesetter State.

“I have paid my dues. I contested in 2019 and again in 2023,” Adelabu stated. “Today, I declare: it is our turn—it is my turn in 2027, as God has revealed it. Adelabu! Àwálòkàn! Penkelemesi Èmilòkàn!”

The resignation order is not merely a cabinet preference but is rooted in Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026. The circular, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, emphasizes that the government is following the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
