“I Rethink My Career Whenever I Act With Her” — Funke Akindele Opens Up on Her “Fear” for Bimbo Akintola

In a moment of raw honesty that has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian film industry, box office queen Funke Akindele has confessed that despite her billionaire status and industry clout, one woman still makes her “tremble” on set: the legendary Bimbo Akintola.

The Battle on Buka Street producer made this startling revelation during her recent ‘Creative Blueprint’ masterclass in Lagos, where she opened up about the intimidating reality of sharing a scene with a powerhouse talent.

Funke, who is widely regarded as one of the most disciplined and successful filmmakers in Africa, admitted that her confidence often takes a hit when she stands side-by-side with Akintola. According to her, Bimbo’s emotional depth is so intense that it triggers a moment of professional crisis.

“There’s only one actor that I always shake for then. If she acts, I rethink my career. Abimbola Akintola… she’s deep,” Funke confessed to a room full of stunned young creatives.

She didn’t stop there. The actress further revealed that the pressure to match Bimbo’s performance often sends her back to the drawing board.

“That’s the actor that if you put me with, I’ll go and rethink,” she added.

For followers of Nollywood’s “Golden Era,” this admission might not come as a total surprise. Bimbo Akintola has long been hailed as an “actor’s actor,” known for her ability to disappear into complex, emotionally heavy roles—most recently seen in her gripping performance in To Kill a Monkey.

GISTLIFE notes that this level of vulnerability from Funke Akindele is rare. It highlights a side of the “Mama Laburu” persona that the public seldom sees—a dedicated artist who, despite her massive fame, still feels the “healthy fear” of being outperformed by a superior craftswoman.

Reflecting on how she handles such intense moments on set, Funke recently shared on Instagram that these experiences have been her greatest teachers.

“The pressure didn’t break me. It matured me. It taught me patience, discipline, and emotional control,” she wrote, perhaps hinting at the high-stakes environments she encounters when working with veterans of Akintola’s caliber.
