In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the Southwest, the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former governor, popularly known as “Iroko,” who steered the affairs of Ondo State between 2009 and 2016, announced his departure in a formal letter addressed to the party chairman in Ward 7, Ondo West Local Government Area. According to the correspondence sighted on Thursday, the resignation is retroactive, having taken effect from April 10, 2026.

Dr. Mimiko noted that the decision to formalize his exit became imperative following persistent public speculations and inquiries regarding his political standing. He clarified that his recent distance from the party’s internal activities necessitated a definitive statement to set the record official.

“Speculations and inquiries about my membership status have made it necessary for me to clarify my position,” Mimiko stated in the letter. “As I have been somewhat distanced from party activities, I wish to put it on record that I am no longer a member of the PDP.”

The two-term governor maintained that his departure was reached without any animosity or ill-will toward the party leadership or its members. While Mimiko has maintained a relatively low profile in active partisan politics in recent years, his exit from the nation’s main opposition party is viewed by analysts as a significant blow to the PDP’s efforts to consolidate its influence in the region.

As of the time of this report, Dr. Mimiko has not indicated his next political destination, leaving observers to speculate whether the veteran politician intends to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or seek a new platform to advance his political interests ahead of future electoral cycles.
