In what has been described as a major win for indigenous storytelling, the critically acclaimed production ‘Kukoyi’ has officially secured a nomination for the prestigious 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). The series, led by visionary filmmaker and actor David Akande, earned its spot in the highly competitive Best Indigenous M-Net Original Series category. This latest recognition further solidifies Akande’s reputation as a powerhouse in the African film industry, transitioning from a “revelation” to one of the continent’s most consistent producers. A graduate of English from the University of Ilorin and a PEFTI Film Institute alumnus, Akande is no stranger to the AMVCA stage. In 2022, his film Alaise won the award for Best Indigenous Language Movie (Yoruba), while also earning three nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), including Best Nigerian Film and Best Achievement in Visual Effects. His track record of excellence includes being named the Revelation of the Year (Male) at the 2018 Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards and receiving multiple nods from the City People Movie Awards. Known for a “unique record of top-notch delivery,” Akande’s work often carries significant social weight. His 2023 film Asa won the Best Social Message award at the BON Awards. Beyond directing and acting, Akande is highly regarded for his linguistic precision, providing notable translation and subtitle credits for award-winning films such as Alakiti and Eti Keta. His work has traveled far beyond Nigerian borders, earning official selections at the Abuja International Film Festival, the Eko International Film Festival, and the International Liftoff Filmmakers Session. The nomination of Kukoyi comes as part of a deepening partnership between Akande and M-Net. As a Producer and Executive Producer for Africa Magic Originals, his recent slate includes Erimorara and the Iboju (2026). Industry insiders have lauded Akande for his commitment to preserving indigenous narratives while maintaining international production standards. The official nomination poster features the filmmaker alongside the iconic AMVCA statuette, signaling a high-stakes race for the coveted award often referred to as the “African Oscars.” Fans and viewers of the series are encouraged to support the production to ensure it clinches the win.
