Prominent Islamic scholar and academic, Professor Mansur Sokoto, has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian political landscape by publicly distancing himself and the Northern region from the “religious sentiments” that helped propel President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to power in 2023.

In a blistering critique that has since gone viral, the Professor argued that despite the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket which secured massive support from the North, the region has gained nothing but “victimhood” under the current administration.

Sokoto alleged that the President’s developmental focus has been lopsided, favoring Lagos State while leaving the North to grapple with systemic decay.

“It appears that Muslims, Islam, and the Northern region are not his priority but rather victims of his leadership. His focus seems to be on Lagos, and even there, Christians are seen as the major beneficiaries,” the scholar claimed.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Professor issued a stern warning to Islamic clerics who often act as political influencers. He cautioned them against using the President’s faith as a campaign tool, insisting that the “Religious Card” is now a spent force.

“I advise our clerics that when you come again to campaign for Bola, do not ask for our support based on religion or because he is a Muslim,” Sokoto stated. “Instead, tell us clearly what development he has brought to us. Show us how his leadership has improved our lives, our healthcare, education, transportation, agriculture, and businesses.”

The scholar concluded by challenging the administration to present a “performance-based” scorecard rather than emotional appeals. He noted that if the promises of stable electricity and economic rejuvenation remain unfulfilled, the North must be allowed the freedom to “choose a better leader.”

The Presidency has yet to issue an official reaction to the Professor’s remarks, but political analysts suggest this could signal a major rift in the President’s core Northern support base ahead of the next election cycle.
