The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered a catastrophic blow in the North-west as the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, and his Deputy, Mani Malam Mummuni, officially dumped the ‘umbrella’ for the APC broom. The long-awaited defection was formally announced on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Government House in Gusau. In a symbolic move that signaled the end of an era, the PDP flag was lowered and replaced with the APC banner immediately after the announcement. Deputy Governor Mummuni, who delivered the bombshell on behalf of the Governor, revealed that the decision was a “strategic rescue mission” for the state. “After wide consultations and a careful assessment of the political situation, we have decided to officially leave the PDP and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the best interest of our people,” Mummuni declared to a cheering crowd of supporters. With this exit, the PDP has lost one of its most vocal governors in the North, further depleting the opposition’s ranks in the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. While the APC celebrates its newest “Big Fish,” the PDP is now facing an existential crisis in the region, with more defections rumored to follow. The Deputy Governor has already directed all supporters and state machinery to begin immediate e-registration with the APC, effectively turning Zamfara into a “Blue State” overnight.
