The Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mani Malam Mummuni, has announced the defection of the state government from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mummuni made the announcement on behalf of Governor Dauda Lawal during an event addressing supporters and stakeholders in Gusau on Monday.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor said the decision followed extensive consultations and a careful assessment of the current political situation in the state and the country.

“I am here on behalf of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal Dare. After wide consultations and considerations of the current political situation in our state and country, and in the best interest of the people of Zamfara State, to bring development, peace, and progress, we have decided to officially leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Mummuni stated.

According to him, the move was aimed at positioning Zamfara State for better collaboration with the Federal Government and addressing pressing challenges, particularly security, facing the state.

The Deputy Governor also called on party members and supporters across the state to support the decision, emphasizing that the move was for the greater good of the state.

Following the announcement, the PDP flag was officially removed from the Zamfara State Government House in a ceremony attended by the Deputy Governor and members of the state cabinet.

The defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the Northwest, as the APC continues to consolidate its control over the region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
