A cloud of grief has enveloped Ebonyi State following the grim discovery that the abducted father of former Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe has been murdered by his captors. The victim, Francis Igwe, the revered traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area, was snatched on Sunday, March 1, while heading to church. What began as a desperate search for the monarch ended in a bloody confrontation between security forces and a ruthless kidnapping syndicate. The Ebonyi State Police Command, through spokesperson Joshua Ukandu, revealed on Friday that the breakthrough came after “technical and intelligence assets” led to the arrest of two key suspects. Under interrogation, the suspects dropped a bombshell: the monarch had been killed on March 2, just twenty-four hours after his abduction. In a dramatic twist, the suspects agreed to lead operatives to their forest hideout to recover the body. However, as the police team approached the lair, they were met with a hail of bullets from other gang members lying in wait. “The operatives responded with superior firepower, overpowering the criminals during the gun battle,” Ukandu stated. The killing of a traditional ruler—especially one targeted on his way to a place of worship—has sent shockwaves through the state’s political and traditional circles. Residents of Ikwo are reportedly in shock, questioning the safety of even the most high-profile citizens. This incident marks a dangerous escalation in the kidnapping-for-ransom trend in the Southeast, where even the elderly and traditional institutions are no longer “off-limits.” The Ebonyi State Police Command has vowed to hunt down the remaining members of the syndicate who fled during the shootout. Meanwhile, the body of the late monarch is being prepared for recovery as the nine suspects await their day in court.
