In a dramatic twist of fate that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political corridors, the man who once held the keys to the nation’s temple of justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, now finds himself behind the cold bars of Kuje Prison.

On Friday, a Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) bail in the staggering sum of N200 million. But the victory was bittersweet: until the paperwork is perfect, the former “Chief Law Officer” and his family remain in custody.

The courtroom was thick with tension as Malami stood alongside his wife and son to face a 16-count money laundering charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The allegations? A massive N8.7 billion fraud that the federal government claims was spirited away during his tenure.

In a ruling that highlights the severity of the case, Justice Abdulmalik laid down “iron-clad” conditions for their freedom:

Despite the bail being granted, the “perfection” process is a race against time. While associates and high-profile friends were seen scurrying through the court premises to meet the requirements, the judge’s order was firm:

The defense, led by legal titan Joseph Daudu, SAN, argued passionately for their release. Surprisingly, the EFCC’s powerhouse lawyer, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, did not oppose the bail, setting the stage for what many expect to be a high-stakes legal battle when the trial officially kicks off on March 16.

This isn’t Malami’s first brush with this specific fire. A previous judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, had set bail at N500 million during a vacation session, but with the case starting afresh under Justice Abdulmalik, the stakes—and the scrutiny—have reached a fever pitch.

Will the man who once directed the nation’s legal battles be able to win his own? Or is this N8.7 billion “rabbit hole” deeper than anyone imagined?
