Character Can Determine How Far Your Career Goes – Al-Farouq Aminu Tells Young Basketball Players

NBA veteran and Founder of the Aminu Good Works Foundation (AGWF), Al-Farouq Aminu, has urged young basketball players to look beyond talent, stressing that character and professionalism are just as important as skill in building a successful career.

Speaking during the official virtual media briefing ahead of the 10th Anniversary AGWF Nigeria Basketball Combine, Aminu described basketball as a profession that demands far more than athletic ability.

“Basketball is a job. When I was younger, I thought my talent and ability to play were all I needed. That’s simply not true,” Aminu said.

Reflecting on his own journey, the former NBA forward explained that many young athletes underestimate the importance of professionalism and personal conduct until they begin competing at the highest level.

According to him, being dependable, respectful, and easy to work with can be just as valuable as scoring points on the court.

“Being professional, having good character, being someone people enjoy working with, and understanding the business side of the game are just as important,” he added.

Aminu concluded by reminding aspiring players that talent may open doors, but character often determines how long those doors remain open.

“No matter how talented or skilled you are, your character can determine how far your career goes.”

The AGWF Nigeria Basketball Combine, now in its 10th edition, continues to provide opportunities for young basketball talents across Nigeria through elite training, exposure, mentorship, and character development, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to building better lives through sport.

This year’s Combine will hold in Ibadan from August 7–9 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, before moving to Abuja from August 13–16 at the MO Arena, where hundreds of aspiring basketball players will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and learn from experienced coaches and mentors.
