Netflix has secured exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Spain and Andorra, marking a major expansion of the streaming giant’s investment in live sports. The company announced the deal in a blog post on Tuesday, stating that it would broadcast all 104 matches of the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal. According to Netflix, the coverage will include pre-match, half-time and post-match programmes tailored to Spanish audiences. The streaming platform also disclosed plans to make one match available free of charge on each matchday in Spain. Matches involving the Spanish national team, as well as both semi-finals and the final, will also be available free-to-air. Netflix Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, said the partnership would bring the excitement of the global football showpiece closer to fans across Spain and Andorra. She described the tournament as a special moment for Spanish football, noting that the country would host the competition in 2030 as reigning champions, according to her statement. FIFA Secretary-General, Mattias Grafström, welcomed the agreement, expressing optimism that the partnership would help bring the tournament closer to fans and expand access to the competition. The deal further strengthens Netflix’s growing presence in live sports broadcasting, following its acquisition of rights to the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups. The streaming company has also expanded into boxing, securing exclusive global broadcasting rights for a scheduled December 11 bout between British heavyweight boxers Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal, with additional centenary celebration matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The agreement signals another major shift in the global sports broadcasting landscape as streaming platforms compete with traditional television networks for premium sporting events.
