In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, political heavyweights Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a massive shift in the country’s opposition landscape.

The two leaders, who recently withdrew from their previous platforms, finalized their defection on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the NDC national headquarters in Abuja. The merger brings together the grassroots machinery of the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya political structure in a bid to unseat the incumbent administration.

The latest development follows weeks of intense behind-the-scenes negotiations. In a public statement, Peter Obi cited internal crises and persistent hostility within his former party as factors that hindered genuine service delivery, necessitating an urgent move to a more stable platform.

The move was finalized just ahead of a critical registration deadline set by the party leadership. NDC National Leader and former Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside National Chairman Moses Cleopas, officially received both men and their supporters, hailing the defection as a watershed moment for Nigeria’s opposition.

With the 2027 presidential race already taking shape, political observers note that the alliance creates a formidable force capable of mobilizing millions of voters across both the southern and northern geopolitical zones.

The NDC’s national working committee is expected to hold an emergency meeting this week to finalize the party’s convention schedule and structural integration plans. Further announcements detailing the unified ticket structure will be released as consultations continue.
