Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is expected to formally declare his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) within the week.

According to sources within the party, Makinde remains firmly committed to the PDP’s structure and is positioning himself to steer the opposition forward ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The anticipated presidential bid coincides with ongoing leadership adjustments following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 30, which nullified the PDP’s November 2025 national convention in Ibadan. In response, the Board of Trustees (BoT) led by Senator Adolphus Wabara stepped in to prevent a leadership vacuum and announced that the party’s National Executive Committee would inaugurate a 10-member caretaker committee.

Multiple sources confirmed that Tanimu Turaki (SAN) has emerged as the preferred choice to chair the new committee. Wabara stated that the intervention aligns with the PDP’s constitution to promote reconciliation and stabilize the party’s operations.

The move has nevertheless met resistance from the faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The opposing camp maintains that the National Working Committee headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed remains the only legitimate leadership and dismissed the actions of the Wabara-led group as an illegality.
