Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a toxic political climate and deepening internal crises within the party’s structures. Obi confirmed the decision in a personal statement shared via his official X handle on Sunday, hours after the party released its timetable for the 2026 primaries and outlined nomination fees ahead of the 2027 general elections. His departure follows months of strategic alignment and comes shortly after attending the ADC National Convention in Abuja alongside other opposition leaders. Clarifying the reasons behind the sudden exit, the former Anambra State governor stated that the decision was not borne out of personal grievances with the party’s leadership, which includes former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Instead, Obi pointed to a pattern of destabilization characterized by endless court cases, suspicion, and internal battles that are undermining efforts to build a united and functional alternative for the country. He noted that the same forces that created hostility within the Labour Party and forced his departure appear to have infiltrated the ADC. ”The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” Obi stated. The announcement comes at a critical point in the election cycle. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC confirmed that the sale of nomination forms will run from May 5 to May 10, 2026, with the presidential primary election scheduled for May 25, 2026. Despite his departure from the platform, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of the nation, emphasizing that his primary focus remains the welfare of citizens, alleviating poverty, and tackling the growing insecurity crisis. Political analysts are watching closely to see what the next step will be for the 2023 Labour Party standard-bearer as the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum.
