The political future of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains shrouded in uncertainty as stakeholders await his much-anticipated declaration next week, Gistlife can confirm.

The ongoing legal battles, coupled with the nullification of the Ibadan convention and subsequent national leadership disputes, have left the party’s machinery fractured. With the governor keeping his cards close to his chest, grassroots anxiety has reached a boiling point over the direction of the state’s political future and the identity of his anointed successor.

Makinde, who leads a faction of the PDP, has been actively exploring alliances across the political spectrum. Following the legal setbacks that voided the convention of the Turaki-led bloc, the governor’s camp has engaged in high-level consultations with the leadership of other political platforms.

However, the continued delay in announcing a clear realignment strategy has created tension within the Southwest PDP structure. Party leaders and supporters, who are eager to maintain a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections, have expressed frustration over the lack of open communication from the state’s leadership.

The uncertainty surrounding whether the governor will remain in the PDP or defect to another political vehicle has stalled grassroots mobilization, while heavily speculated names like Bimbo Adekanmbi remain at the center of the transition rumor mill without official confirmation.

The broader national landscape is also putting pressure on the governor’s next move. Following the defection of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) due to parallel conventions and leadership disputes, political analysts have pointed out that similar pressures exist in Oyo State.

At a recent political summit in Ibadan, Makinde warned against the dangers of a one-party state, signaling his resistance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while simultaneously criticizing the national management of the PDP.

As the days draw closer to the scheduled declaration, all eyes are on the Governor to either salvage the remaining PDP structure in the region or announce a decisive shift to a new political home.
