The Yoruba movie industry was set abuzz on Monday as star actress and producer, Wumi Toriola, took to social media to vent her frustration over what she described as the “ridiculous” financial demands and lack of professional craft among emerging talents in Nollywood.

In a series of heated posts that have since gone viral, the mother of one slammed the new crop of actors who, despite having “half-baked” skills, are reportedly charging exorbitant fees that do not align with their market value or on-set delivery.

‘You Sabi Act?’ Toriola, known for her fiery persona both on and off-screen, did not mince words as she questioned the competence of those she called “social media stars.” She expressed anger that many who have no intention of honing their craft are now filling up movie sets, causing delays and frustration for producers and Executive Producers (EPs).

“Involve me?? You sabi act?” she queried. “The few ones who know the craft won’t wait until they start selling in the market before they call ridiculous prices. As a producer and an actor, I am angry. Please call your price, but be sure you know the craft. Half-baked actors with no intention of growing fill the place.”

The ‘Take 40’ Nightmare Providing a glimpse into the chaotic reality of modern film sets, Toriola revealed she was currently experiencing a “Take 40” session, a term used when a single scene is repeated forty times due to an actor’s inability to deliver.

She challenged the upcoming acts to prove their worth at the “grassroots” before making heavy demands on established producers. “Nobody uses upcoming reach me. Check my movies; they are a blend of stars and new talents. But call your price only after the market knows you. I am for the grassroots, let the people know you first before stressing EPs,” she added.

A Warning to Schools and Godfathers The actress also extended her critique to acting schools, urging them to properly train students rather than merely collecting fees. She warned that poorly trained actors only bring “problems on set.”

Furthermore, Toriola delved into the controversial topic of “godfatherism,” cautioning that relying on such structures can be a deadly mistake. According to her, godparents often block intending helpers, cancel opportunities, and breed unnecessary hate for their protégés, potentially leading to the “death” of a promising career.

This latest outburst follows Toriola’s previous calls for reform in the industry, where she has criticized Production Managers for nonchalant attitudes and decried being typecast in violent roles.
