In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to officially defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) tomorrow, Monday.

The former Governor of Kano State, who has been the face of the “Kwankwasiyya” movement, is expected to make his formal declaration in Kano alongside his long-term political ally and immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.

Sources close to the development confirmed that the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, and the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, will be on ground in the ancient city of Kano to receive the political heavyweight.

The defection follows months of high-level horse-trading. Insiders revealed that Kwankwaso had initially hesitated, reportedly eyeing a vice-presidential slot for the 2027 elections in a potential alliance involving Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The move comes on the heels of the recent defection of Kwankwaso’s “political son” and current Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January. With the NNPP structure in Kano facing significant shifts, Kwankwaso’s exit to the ADC is seen as a strategic “reset” to revitalize his 2027 presidential ambitions.

“Kwankwaso owns Kano, and he will demonstrate his strength on Monday,” a top NNPP official who is also moving to the ADC told our correspondent.

In a swift reaction, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the move as inconsequential. APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated that Kwankwaso lacks the national structure to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“How many governors does he have? In 2023, he won only one state. We are focused on development, not decamping,” Basiru remarked.

As Kano prepares for the massive rally tomorrow, all eyes are now on the ADC to see if the “Red Cap” revolution can find a new home in the party.
