A dark, heavy cloud has settled over the Gida Dubu area of Dutse after a series of horrific fire outbreaks turned a peaceful week into a nightmare, claiming the lives of two innocent siblings and leaving families in total ruins.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the twin disasters on Thursday, March 19, sending a wave of shock through the Jigawa State capital.

The most heart-wrenching incident struck in the dead of night on Tuesday, March 17. At approximately 4:00 AM, while the city of Dutse was fast asleep, a ferocious fire erupted at the residence of Aminuddeen Abubakar, a staff member of the

Before neighbors or emergency responders could even process the orange glow in the sky, the flames had already turned the house into a furnace. Trapped inside were Abubakar’s two children—aged just two and six years old. Despite the desperate, frantic efforts of those on the scene, the fire was too fast. Both children were confirmed dead at the scene, leaving their parents and the university community in inconsolable grief.

As if the loss of two young lives wasn’t enough, the “fire demon” struck the same Gida Dubu axis again today, Thursday, March 19, at high noon.

This time, preliminary findings point to a deadly electrical spark in the kitchen of a resident identified as Nura Garba (popularly known as Dangwan Gwan). The blaze ripped through the kitchen and jumped to the adjoining houses of Mu’azu Garba and Mohammed Aliyu (Jaujen Hadejia), melting roofing materials and destroying property worth millions.

While the fire service managed to contain the second blaze before it claimed more lives, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, issued a somber statement to the press.

“The cause of the first fire is still a mystery, but we are investigating. We urge every resident to be extremely careful with electrical appliances and open flames. This tragedy must not repeat itself.”
