A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has sent a strong warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that President Bola Tinubu’s presidency will hit the rocks in 2027 if the opposition successfully floats a “mega-coalition” ticket. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on March 15, the veteran journalist argued that a united front involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a heavyweight from the South is the only formula needed to end the “Tinubu foundation.” Momodu noted that despite past criticisms, the current economic climate has made Atiku Abubakar a more attractive option to many Nigerians. He likened Atiku’s persistence to that of U.S. President Donald Trump, who returned to power despite being written off by critics. “From my analysis, Atiku Abubakar—even those who didn’t like Atiku before—now he’s smelling like roses, because the enemy of your enemy is your friend. He has prepared forever,” Momodu stated. The ADC chieftain believes that the key to defeating the incumbent lies in a North-South alliance. He suggested that if Atiku joins forces with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi or former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the APC will face an insurmountable challenge. He said, “I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person that comes from the South, Tinubu will be gone. It will be the end of Tinubu’s foundation, not just the APC.” Momodu expressed deep concern over the massive wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. He warned that Tinubu’s attempt to “contest against himself” by weakening the opposition is a dangerous trend for Nigeria’s democratic stability. “It is a sad day for democracy,” he remarked, adding that the country needs a viable opposition to check the excesses of the ruling party. The interview comes as the ADC prepares for its National Convention on April 14, 2026. The party has become the new home for several political heavyweights, including Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, and other notable figures like Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola. The coalition is working toward building a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections, with ward and state congresses set to begin nationwide on April 7.
