The camp of a serving Governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into a state of confusion following stringent conditions reportedly handed down by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor, who has been making high-level moves to dump the main opposition party for the ruling APC, is said to be “bewildered” after recent consultations in Abuja didn’t go as planned.

Unlike the usual practice where a defecting Governor is immediately recognized as the leader of the party in his state, sources reveal that the APC top echelons have made it clear that this courtesy will not be extended.

This move is reportedly fueled by “aboriginal” APC members in the Governor’s home state who insist they can win the next election without him. They argue that the Governor should join as a member and not as a “dictator” of the party structure.

Perhaps the most “bitter pill” for the Governor to swallow is the condition regarding his successor. Investigations revealed that the APC has explicitly told the Governor that he will not have the right to handpick the candidate to succeed him in 2027. Instead, he would have to negotiate with existing stakeholders to determine a consensus candidate.

Furthermore, his loyalists—who are expected to move with him—have been told they will receive no special consideration or automatic tickets for elective positions in the upcoming 2027 primaries, which are set to kick off this April.

The tough terms have reportedly left the Governor’s supporters downcast. A source within the camp stated that the current offer essentially leaves the Governor with only a “sole senatorial ticket,” meaning his followers would effectively become “cheerleaders” for the old APC members.

“The confusion is palpable,” the source said. “A defiant section of the camp is already calling for the defection bid to be reversed so we can focus on winning the state under the PDP instead of being humiliated in the APC.”

If this defection eventually scales through, it would further deplete the ranks of the PDP. Following the 2023 elections, the party held 13 states. However, a wave of defections has seen governors from Zamfara, Plateau, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Taraba, and Enugu join the ruling APC, while the Osun Governor moved to the Accord Party.

As it stands, the embattled Governor is still reportedly “pressing buttons” in Abuja to see if the conditions can be relaxed before the April window closes.
