A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to reduce petrol prices to between ₦350 and ₦400 per litre and increase the ₦70,000 national minimum wage amid worsening economic hardship. The group, led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, made the demands in a communiqué issued after its monthly National Executive Committee meeting held in Lagos at the weekend. Afenifere described the Federal Government’s proposed petrol price stabilisation mechanism, which seeks to keep the price at no more than ₦1,350 per litre, as inadequate to meet the expectations of Nigerians. It called for an immediate reduction in pump prices, saying the move would help ease the financial burden on citizens struggling with rising living costs. The organisation also demanded an upward review of the national minimum wage, arguing that persistent inflation had eroded the purchasing power of workers earning ₦70,000 monthly. The communiqué described hardship, hunger and high inflation as major concerns under the Tinubu administration, while faulting the government’s handling of issues relating to security, the economy and citizens’ welfare. Afenifere also expressed concern over inflammatory political statements ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging politicians to exercise restraint and conduct their campaigns peacefully. The group further called on the Federal Government to guarantee free and fair elections in 2027 by allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to operate independently. The communiqué was signed by Olaitan and the organisation’s newly appointed substantive Secretary-General, Alade Rotimi-John.
