The Nigerian film industry is draped in mourning following the passage of veteran actor and distinguished scholar, Professor Kola Oyewo, who has died at the age of 80.

Since the news of his transition broke on Friday, a wave of heartfelt tributes has flooded social media, with colleagues, students, and admirers celebrating the life and enduring impact of a man who was widely regarded as a cornerstone of the Nigerian theatre and film space.

For many in the creative industry, the loss of Professor Oyewo is not merely the death of an actor, but the departure of a mentor who bridged the gap between academic theory and practical stagecraft. Known for his authoritative voice and unmatched command of the craft, his death has triggered a profound sense of collective loss among those who learned at his feet.

Leading the tributes, actor Kunle Afod expressed the somber mood currently gripping the industry. Sharing a poignant message, Afod noted, “Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten.”

The outpouring of grief has been swift, with notable figures such as Aisha Lawal, Kiekie, Kevin Ikeduba, Mustapha Sholagbade, and Jamiu Azeez taking to their platforms to honor his memory. For many of these stars, Oyewo was more than a colleague; he was a “grandpa” and a guiding light whose presence on set brought an air of professionalism and deep cultural appreciation.

His legacy extends far beyond his iconic roles in classics like Saworoide and The Gods Are Not to Blame. As a career academic, he shaped the minds of hundreds of students across various Nigerian universities, instilling in them the discipline and depth that defined his own illustrious journey.

As the industry prepares to honor his life, the common refrain among those paying tribute is clear: though the curtain has fallen on a remarkable career, the lessons he taught and the characters he brought to life remain immortal.
