Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a prominent governorship aspirant in Ogun State, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her exit follows allegations of severe maltreatment, systemic exclusion, and total disrespect by the leadership of the ruling party.

In a scathing resignation letter dated May 31, 2026, and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, the former health commissioner laid bare the internal friction that forced her out. Despite her unwavering loyalty and adherence to party regulations, she revealed that the political machinery chose to ignore her contributions and sideline her structures.

Obasanjo explained that she deliberately maintained decorum and accepted the party’s consensus arrangement for the governorship ticket, even though the selection process was heavily flawed and marred by violence against her supporters. She disclosed that at the consensus venue, she was completely ignored despite being the most prominent opposition to the chosen candidate.

According to her, post-consensus reconciliation efforts proved to be a farce. She noted that after a meeting with the party’s consensus candidate where her team made three simple requests, the candidate promised to respond within a week but completely ghosted her for over two months.

Refusing to tolerate further marginalization, the former Senator, who represented Ogun Central between 2007 and 2011, stated that when disrespect becomes the only dish served, it is time to leave the table. While she expressed immense gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, state chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, and Ogun Central senatorial chairman Chief Soremi for their personal warmth, she maintained that her journey with the APC has officially come to an end.
