The Teachers’ Social Security Scheme, widely known as the Endwell Scheme, has achieved a historic milestone by disbursing more than N1.7 billion in benefits to over 6,300 teachers and next-of-kin between 2022 and 2026. This impressive financial performance represents one of the strongest periods in the welfare initiative’s 30-year history, signaling a new era of stability and resilience for educators in Oyo State. The impressive figures were officially presented in the Management Report during the 14th State Biennial General Meeting held at the Teachers’ House in Oluyole Estate, Ibadan. Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Comrade Obasola Elijah Olayiwola, reaffirmed the scheme’s solid financial footing and its unwavering commitment to fulfilling obligations to its members. According to the management report, the significant surge in benefit payments is driven by an increasing number of retiring teachers and a growing subscriber base. This growth has been further boosted by the recent recruitment of new teachers under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde. Speaking at the parallel Biennial Meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, the Union Chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismael, celebrated the turnaround of the scheme. He noted that the Endwell Scheme has fully recovered from past skepticism and opposition, standing strong for three decades without a single record of financial collapse. “Today marks another milestone in the history of Endwell. The gloomy days are completely over. The scheme has weathered storms, survived skepticism, and continues to wax stronger daily,” Comrade Raji stated. He recalled that the social security initiative was originally conceived at a time when retiring teachers were left vulnerable by various tiers of government, suffering severe financial and psychological distress due to delayed pensions and gratuities. Today, the scheme has evolved into a highly dependable lifeline providing Non-Refundable Terminal Benefits and death-in-service compensation across the state. To ensure long-term viability, the Board of Trustees assured members of continuous, disciplined financial management and innovative investment strategies designed to sustain reliable returns for contributors. The event also featured a special ceremony honoring the founding fathers and early contributors whose foresight and courage midwifed the initiative three decades ago. The recognized pioneers included Comrade Anusat Babatunde Amuda, Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope, Comrade Elijah Olu Abiala, Comrade Suleiman Adediran, Mr. Tade Ipadeola, Mrs. J. L. Latunji, and Alhaji Oladiti Oladapo. Following the remarkable success, the Union leadership has issued a strong call to newly recruited educators to enroll in the scheme, reinforcing its position as the most effective welfare safety net for teachers in Oyo State.
