President Bola Tinubu has officially endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, as the consensus governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The President’s decisive move was made public on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by members of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The presidential nod serves as a significant reinforcement of the political transition plan in Lagos, following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s announcement on Monday naming Hamzat as his preferred successor. Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier formalized this endorsement after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where the Deputy Governor officially declared his gubernatorial ambitions before key party leaders and the State Executive Council.

While the endorsement by both the President and the incumbent Governor provides Hamzat with a formidable advantage, it has not been without pushback within the party. Emerging reports indicate that some aspirants, including APC chieftain Ajose, have already begun to kick against the consensus arrangement.

Despite the internal friction, the alignment between the Presidency and the Lagos State government signals a unified front by the party’s top hierarchy to ensure a seamless transition in Nigeria’s commercial nerve center. This endorsement is expected to reshape the political landscape in Lagos as other stakeholders within the APC react to the President’s choice of the Deputy Governor for the 2027 race.
