THE Lagos State Government has officially cleared the air regarding a viral report suggesting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had been ordered to resign from office on health grounds.

In a strongly-worded press statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, the government described the report, originally published by Sahara Reporters, as a total falsehood and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

According to the statement, there is no truth to the claim that the governor was asked to step down or that the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, was set to take over the reins of power due to any medical emergency. Akosile maintained that Governor Sanwo-Olu is in good health and remains fully committed to his executive duties.

“This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign—this is another fake news, which has become a pattern of Sahara Reporters. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State,” the statement read.

Providing further context to the Governor’s activities, the spokesperson revealed that earlier on Monday, Governor Sanwo-Olu hosted Deputy Governor Hamzat at the Lagos House. The visit was reportedly a formal courtesy call during which Dr Hamzat notified the Governor of his intention to contest for the governorship seat in the 2027 elections.

The government described the atmosphere of the meeting as cordial, contrary to the tensed narrative suggested by the viral report. While noting that the administration would ordinarily ignore such “baseless” claims, Akosile explained that the clarification became necessary to reassure Lagosians and protect the image of the state from disinformation.

The statement concluded by advising the general public and stakeholders within the state to disregard the resignation story and treat it with the contempt it deserves, reaffirming that the leadership of the state remains stable and focused on its developmental agenda.
