THE bustling Okokomaiko axis of Lagos State was on Sunday afternoon turned into a scene of grief and horror when a luxury Lexus Jeep crushed an adult male roadside hawker to death.

The fatal incident, which occurred during the afternoon rush, involved a Lexus vehicle with registration number SMK 674 HY. According to eyewitness accounts, the driver lost control of the vehicle, ramming into the unsuspecting vendor who was plying his trade by the side of the road.

Instant Death Confirming the tragedy, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) revealed that the severity of the impact was so catastrophic that the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene before any medical intervention could be rendered.

In a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, it was noted that the agency’s operatives were immediately deployed to the area to manage the volatile situation and prevent a total breakdown of traffic flow.

The statement read in part: “LASTMA officials promptly arrived at the scene, secured the area, and coordinated the removal of the remains from the roadway to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles and prevent further accidents.”

Police Investigation Officers from the Ketu Police Division were subsequently invited to the scene. The body of the deceased has since been evacuated and deposited at the Badagry Mortuary for autopsy and further identification.

While the driver of the Lexus Jeep is reportedly assisting the police with their findings, preliminary reports suggest that a high rate of speed may have contributed to the loss of control. The vehicle has been impounded as investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the avoidable tragedy.

The incident has once again sparked concerns regarding the safety of traders and hawkers who frequent the edges of Lagos’ high-speed corridors, despite repeated warnings from state authorities.
