THE Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has announced that 200 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces will be deployed to Türkiye for specialized military training to strengthen the nation’s internal security operations. General Musa, who is on an official working visit to Ankara, finalized the arrangement during a high-level meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defence, Yaşar Güler. The visit is part of a strategic push to modernize Nigeria’s military capabilities through global partnerships. In a video briefing shared on Sunday, the Defence Chief described the relationship between both nations as deeply rooted, noting that the collaboration would extend beyond training into the critical area of military technology. “Nigeria and Türkiye have come a long way since 1960. Türkiye has been like family to Nigeria. We’ve worked together truly; we share so many common things together,” General Musa stated. A key highlight of the bilateral talks was the agreement on the transfer of military technology and the joint production of defence hardware. The move is expected to reduce Nigeria’s total dependence on foreign arms imports by fostering local manufacturing capabilities. According to the CDS, both countries are working to deepen cooperation in the production of sophisticated hardware, which will be instrumental in the ongoing fight against banditry, terrorism, and other security threats across the federation. Military analysts suggest that the choice of Türkiye is strategic, given the country’s recent advancements in drone technology and tactical armored vehicles equipment that has proven highly effective in asymmetrical warfare. General Musa emphasized that the 200 troops being sent for training would return with advanced skills in modern combat tactics and equipment handling, providing the Nigerian military with a much-needed tactical edge. The Defence Minister expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would usher in a new era of security cooperation, ensuring that Nigeria remains a dominant force in regional stability.
