The Political Editor of Arise News, Sumner Sambo, has raised a critical alarm for Nigeria’s leading opposition figures, advising former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi to urgently reconsider their alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following a wave of legal and structural instabilities. Sambo cautioned that the ADC is currently a compromised vehicle for any serious coalition attempt ahead of future elections. He highlighted the freezing of David Mark’s leadership within the party as a primary symptom of a much deeper malaise, noting that the party is currently entangled in a web of litigation that threatens its very viability. According to Sambo, the opposition’s interest in the ADC was largely driven by a tactical “alphabetical advantage” on the ballot—a move reminiscent of the APC’s 2013 formation strategy to stay ahead of the PDP. However, he argued that this strategic positioning cannot outweigh the risks posed by separate legal cases challenging the legitimacy of the party’s executive structure, including claims that even the tenure of Ralph Nwosu was illegitimate. The veteran journalist dismissed the notion that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is responsible for the ADC’s turmoil, describing the crisis as largely self-inflicted. While acknowledging that the ruling party is naturally benefiting from the opposition’s disarray, he stressed that the ADC leadership was well aware of these internal landmines before engaging with the broader opposition front. Sambo further revealed that secret overtures have already begun toward the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), a platform owned by former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson. Even so, he issued a stern warning regarding the fragility of such alternatives, pointing out that many newly registered parties secured their status through court mandates and remain vulnerable to sudden legal reversals or appeals that could leave the opposition without a valid platform at a critical hour.
