Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially set the stage for the 2027 transition, revealing that his administration has commenced a deliberate process to identify and name his successor. In a newsletter titled “The Business of Governance” released on Sunday, the Governor confirmed that he is already engaging with “credible individuals” to ensure a seamless handover and the continuity of his administration’s policies. This announcement follows a high-stakes mandate recently given to the Oyo State Advisory Council, led by Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, to interact with all governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The council is tasked with providing recommendations for a candidate to lead the “Omituntun 3.0” era. Among the heavyweights currently under consideration are the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin; Member of the House of Representatives, Adedeji Olajide (Odidiomo); Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Nureni Adeniran; and the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, Debo Akande. Governor Makinde emphasized that the transition is a response to the questions of residents regarding the future direction of the state. He further hinted that a consensus candidate is expected to emerge by Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Beyond state politics, Makinde expressed grave concerns regarding the national political landscape, warning against the potential devolution of Nigeria into a one-party state. He argued that the current fragmentation of the opposition and the “quiet withdrawal” of citizens from political discourse threaten the nation’s accountability. “Democracy is built on plurality and the presence of different voices,” Makinde stated. “When opposition becomes ineffective, accountability weakens, and the challenges we face become harder to resolve.” The Governor pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders across various sectors to ensure the state’s democratic space remains inclusive and sustainable as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
