• ‘You Don’t Know Who Is Watching,’ AMVCA Winner Alarms On Missed Opportunities • From Banking To ₦1.4bn Box Office Glory: The Secret Behind The ‘Brotherhood’ Star’s Rise • Why I Would Entrust A Diligent Car Washer With A Company Executive Role — Bakre

Award-winning actor and former Big Brother Naija star, Tobi Bakre, has sent a strong wake-up call to burgeoning talents in the Nigerian film industry, insisting that the bridge between obscurity and life-changing opportunities is built on the pillars of professionalism and unwavering diligence.

Bakre, who has successfully transitioned from a career in investment banking to becoming one of Nollywood’s most formidable action leads, shared these insights during a recent appearance on the Menisms Podcast.

The 31-year-old Gangs of Lagos star expressed concern over a growing trend where young practitioners treat minor roles or tasks with levity, oblivious to the fact that talent scouts and industry giants are often observing from the sidelines.

“To our fellow colleagues out there, to our younger ones… it doesn’t matter what you are doing, just do it well. You don’t know who is watching,” Bakre asserted.

He further challenged the mindset of those waiting for a “big break” before showing their best work, stating, “God has sent people several times, and you didn’t show them anything, so please show something.”

Drawing a parallel between the film industry and everyday life, the father of two explained that a person’s work ethic in “little things” is the ultimate litmus test for their readiness for greater responsibilities.

According to him, he would be more inclined to offer a corporate opportunity to a car washer who demonstrates high-level commitment to his craft than to a professional who lacks seriousness.

“I could put them in charge of a company once I see just how they’re handling that little thing,” the Ondo-born actor added.

Bakre’s advice comes on the heels of a record-breaking streak in the industry. Since his breakout in the 2018 Double Wahala season of BBNaija, he has defied the “reality star” stereotype to become the industry’s highest-grossing actor in 2025, with box office revenues exceeding ₦1.4 billion.

His portfolio includes critically acclaimed performances as ‘Akin’ in Brotherhood (2022)—which earned him the Best Actor in a Drama award at the 2023 AMVCAs—and ‘Obalola’ in Prime Video’s Gangs of Lagos.

The University of Lagos graduate, who is currently married to Anu Oladosu, remains a vocal advocate for the “corporate-creative” hybrid model, urging actors to view their craft with the same discipline required in the banking halls where he spent four years before his onscreen debut.
