WARRI – A prominent medical practitioner and politician, Dr. Austin Orette, has officially accepted the nomination of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fly the party’s flag as the senatorial candidate for Delta South in the 2027 general elections. In a move that has sent ripples through the political landscape of the oil-rich district, Dr. Orette declared that his long-standing aspiration to represent the people is fueled by a desire to bring intellectual rigor back to the Nigerian Senate. He described the legislative chamber as the “engine room” of democracy, warning that the hallowed halls should not be a sanctuary for those seeking to plunder the nation’s commonwealth. Accepting the nomination, Dr. Orette took a swipe at the nation’s current legal framework, arguing that Nigerians have remained “prisoners of unjust laws” inherited from military and neo-military eras. He lamented that many existing statutes were designed to work against the citizens rather than for them, citing instances where executive brigandage and the arbitrary demolition of properties occur without legal recourse. ”The years of the military were years of the locust because there was no legislative chamber to check the excesses of those who legislate with the gun,” Orette stated. “Now that we are here, we must look at all the decrees that made this union unworkable. Our laws should make us free people, not prisoners.” The senatorial hopeful further outlined a vision for “visionary legislation,” emphasizing that a true lawmaker must be prepared to sow seeds of policy that may only be harvested by future generations. He pledged to push for laws that reward excellence over mediocrity and protect the vulnerable from the predatory tendencies of the powerful. Dr. Orette also dismissed the current reliance on palliatives by various levels of government, describing them as an insufficient substitute for just and equitable laws. According to him, the focus of the 2027 assembly must be to enact statutes that provide solutions to the nation’s problems and prevent the “indolent class” from draining the state’s resources. ”A senator must be innovative and curious about legislation. I have been preparing all my life for this position,” he said. “We must pass laws that prevent the strong from robbing the weak and ensure that what belongs to the vulnerable is not seized and given to the mighty.” As the race for the Delta South seat intensifies, Orette’s emergence under the NDC platform is expected to shift the focus of the campaign toward legislative reform and constitutional review. He concluded his acceptance by calling on the electorate to join him in the unfinished task of nation-building, promising to serve with the full extent of his professional and intellectual endowment.
