The internal turbulence rocking the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a dramatic turn on Tuesday, as the camp of the PDP Governors’ Forum officially distanced itself from the “consensus” leadership recently produced by the Nyesom Wike-backed faction. The development, which comes just days before the scheduled March 29–30 National Convention, has effectively stalled ongoing reconciliation efforts and pushed the party back to the brink of a total collapse. The Nyesom Wike-led faction had earlier announced Abdulrahman Mohammed (North-Central) as the consensus candidate for National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu (South-East) for National Secretary. However, the governors’ camp, led by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, has labeled the move “fundamentally flawed and illegal.” nsiders within the Tanimu Turaki-led NWC told Nigerian Tribune that they are not backing down. Despite the court’s nullification of their convention, they insist that the process being handled by the Wike group is an “imposition” disguised as consensus. “The reconciliation efforts have collapsed. The Wike group insisted our members must participate in their convention by purchasing forms. As far as we are concerned, that process is illegal. We will explore all legal options to protect the party,” a source revealed. In a move to consolidate power, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly appealed to heavyweights like former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom to step aside for the incumbent Acting Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed. The proposed zoning for the Wike-backed NWC includes: | Position | Zone | State (Proposed) | | :— | :— | :— | | National Chairman | North-Central | Gombe/Kogi (Mohammed) | | National Secretary | South-East | Imo (Anyanwu) | | National Vice Chair (SW) | South-West | Lagos | | Woman Leader | South-West | Oyo | Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has warned that a factional convention will lead to a “lose-lose” outcome. He accused “fifth columnists” of sabotaging the unity convention that both camps had previously agreed upon. Meanwhile, a member of the Board of Trustees, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, has made a passionate plea for peace: “Enough of division, enough of court cases. It is time to end further litigations and come together to forge a common front ahead of 2027.” As the Turaki-led NWC continues its meeting at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja today, all eyes are on whether the PDP can survive this latest onslaught of internal warfare before the March 29 showdown.
