Following the announcement of a N10,000 monthly transportation allowance, civil servants across the Pacesetter State are sending major “thank you” notes to Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speaking with GistLife on Monday, workers expressed massive relief, noting that the intervention couldn’t have come at a better time as the fuel crisis continues to bite hard into their monthly “take-home” pay.

For many Oyo workers, the struggle to get to their desks every morning has become a major financial headache. Between the soaring cost of petrol and the jump in commercial bus fares, many were already feeling the squeeze.

”To be honest, we were already reaching a breaking point,” one civil servant told GistLife at the Agodi Secretariat. “By the time you subtract transport money from your salary, there’s barely enough left for food. This N10,000 is a real cushion. It shows the Governor actually hears us.”

The allowance, which kicks off this March 2026, is part of the state’s Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative.

Addressing stakeholders at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub, Governor Makinde didn’t mince words about the economic situation. He made it clear that the government isn’t just watching from the sidelines.

“This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing. We understand that transportation costs have gone up significantly, and as a government, we must act to ease that burden,” the Governor stated

While the allowance is initially set for a three-month run, the feedback from the grassroots is unanimous: It’s a win. Labor leaders and youth entrepreneurs from the YEAP project also joined in the applause, praising the administration for balancing infrastructure growth with human-centered welfare.
