Popular Nollywood actor, Aremu Afolayan, has offered a public apology to Nigerians following a wave of intense criticism over his recent comments regarding the state of the nation.

The actor, known for his outspoken nature, took to social media on Thursday to plead for mercy, stating that the insults and “curses” he has received in recent days have become “overwhelming.”

Afolayan’s apology comes after a viral video from a recent EKO57 campaign gathering—a group mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 bid—showed him downplaying the rising cost of living and dismissing reports of insurgency as “scripted.”

In his clarification, the actor denied allegations that he was being sponsored by political interests, asserting that he never received money to influence his stance.

“To all Nigerians, please forgive me. I’m truly sorry. The insults and backlash I’ve been receiving are overwhelming. I did not take money from anyone,” he stated.

Clarifying his position on the country’s security challenges, Afolayan revealed a personal encounter with the menace of kidnapping. He disclosed that his best friend’s mother was recently abducted, and a ransom had to be paid to secure her freedom.

According to him, his previous comments were misunderstood. He explained that his point was that anyone reading a “script” claiming the country is fine is lying, as insecurity is a visible reality.

He said, “It’s clear that insecurity exists, and my point was simply that no one should deny that reality. My best friend’s mother was abducted and we had to pay to secure her release, so I cannot say there is no insecurity.”

The actor concluded by announcing his total withdrawal from partisan political activities and support for any candidate, citing his current “lowest stage” and the need for peace of mind.

“At this point, I am stepping away from anything related to politics,” Afolayan added.
