The age-old “Jollof War” has finally received a royal verdict as King Charles III officially crowned Nigeria’s version of the dish as the ultimate winner during a historic state banquet for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Hosting a Nigerian leader at Windsor Castle for the first time in 37 years, the British Monarch didn’t just stick to diplomacy; he leaned into the culture. While raising a toast to the President and First Lady Remi Tinubu, the King sent the internet into a frenzy with a simple declaration: “The Jollof is only the best; Nigerian, of course.”

The visit marks a major milestone in UK-Nigeria relations, being the first state visit of its kind in nearly four decades. The President and First Lady were captured in a regal carriage ride with the Monarch, while Mrs. Tinubu was seen engaging with Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.

However, despite the pomp and pageantry, the King’s comment on Jollof has become the biggest talking point, sparking a mixture of national pride and heated political debate back home.

As expected, the “National Eye” on social media has been twitching with diverse reactions. While supporters of the administration are hailing the “Jagaban” for the international recognition, critics and “Obidients” (supporters of Peter Obi) are less impressed by the optics.

Gistlife notes that this isn’t the first time King Charles has shown a soft spot for “Naija” flavor. From hosting DJ Cuppy at the Palace to chatting with DJ Dorcas Fapson about entertainment, the King seems to be a low-key fan of the Giant of Africa’s cultural exports.

While the Jollof win is a massive “vawulence” victory over Ghana, the real question remains: will this historic meeting at Windsor translate into tangible benefits for the average Nigerian on the street?
