The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration following the release of the 2026 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), which ranked Nigeria as the fourth most terrorism-affected country in the world. The party described the ranking as a “shameful” testament to the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. In a statement issued on Thursday, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, noted that the statistics represent “more attacks, more deaths, and communities living in fear” rather than mere abstract numbers. According to the GTI report, terror-related incidents in Nigeria took a sharp upward turn, rising from 120 recorded in 2024 to 171 in 2025. The report further highlighted the devastating impact of insurgency in the North-East, revealing that: Borno State remains the epicenter, accounting for 67 percent of all attacks and a staggering 72 percent of total deaths. Civilians are the primary victims, making up 67 percent of the fatalities. Abdullahi lambasted the federal government for its perceived indifference, pointing out that top security officials are often out of the country during periods of national mourning. “At a moment when Nigerians are grieving and communities across the country are living under constant threat, Tinubu, his National Security Adviser, and the Minister of Defence are abroad. The contrast is clear: a country in crisis, and a leadership that is absent,” the statement read. The opposition party expressed deep concern over the continued operations of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), as well as the emergence of new terror groups like Lakurawa. The ADC warned that without a radical shift in strategy, the security situation could spiral further out of control.
