The Nigerian political landscape was rocked in the early hours of Thursday as heavy-weight politician and former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, officially severed ties with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a move that has sent shockwaves through the National Assembly and the corridors of power, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives has traded the “Umbrella” for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a formal letter dated March 11 and addressed to his ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri, the influential lawmaker cited the “lingering internal crisis” and deep-seated divisions within the PDP as his primary reasons for walking away. “The leadership disagreements and divisions… have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my active participation,” Tambuwal wrote. “The ongoing conflicts have, unfortunately, weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.” After weeks of “wide consultations,” Tambuwal confirmed his registration with the ADC, claiming the move is fueled by a desire for a platform built on integrity, accountability, and national development. While he expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platforms he previously enjoyed, his exit marks a significant blow to the opposition party’s influence in the North-West.
