In a powerful and emotional intervention during Thursday’s plenary, the former Senate President and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has told the Federal Government that bravery alone cannot win the war against terror. Addressing the Senate, Lawan warned that the Nigerian Armed Forces are being hamstrung by administrative bottlenecks that delay the release of critical funds, even after they have been approved by the National Assembly and the President. “Our armed forces and our security agencies could not get the basic resources to deal with the insecurity. They are not magicians; there is hardly anything anyone could do if you’re not properly armed to face these criminals,” Lawan declared. Lawan highlighted a tragic reality: while the military is constitutionally barred from complaining about their welfare or equipment in public, it is the duty of lawmakers to be their voice. In a stinging critique of the Senate’s routine response to security tragedies, Lawan urged his colleagues to move past symbolic gestures. “My distinguished colleagues, we may be standing here for one-minute silence every day, but that won’t solve the problem,” he said. “We will be happier if we consider other means and other ways of enabling our armed forces.” Lawan’s outcry comes just 24 hours after reports emerged that at least 65 soldiers were killed in coordinated jihadist raids across the Northeast over the last two weeks. With ISWAP using sophisticated drones and anti-aircraft machinery, the Senator’s demand for “modern hardware” and “timely funding” has never been more urgent.+1 The Deadline: With the 2026 Budget currently under defense, Lawan is pushing for a “full and immediate” implementation to ensure that the ₦1.5 trillion proposed for the Army actually turns into boots, bullets, and technology on the ground.
