Former Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has stirred controversy by claiming that Arsenal is “cheating” their way to the Premier League title.

Mikel Obi, who spoke on talkSPORT, insisted he would personally refuse to recognize the Gunners as champions because he believes they are winning matches “illegally.”

The former Nigerian captain was specifically referring to Mikel Arteta’s side’s dominance from set-pieces, which has seen them pull ahead in the title race.

Arsenal is currently seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, although they have played one more fixture than the defending champions.

Speaking on the North London club’s tactics, Mikel Obi said: “They’ve cheated their way to winning the Premier League. So I wouldn’t recognize them as winners, because for me it’s illegal the way they’re winning games.”

He further called on the league authorities to intervene and stop the physical tactics used by Arsenal players during set-pieces.

“It’s illegal unless the Premier League right now from this weekend stamp that out. We don’t want to see that in the game,” he added.

The comments have sparked a heated debate among football fans, with many Arsenal supporters dismissing the claims as “bitterness” from a former rival, while others argue that the league needs to look closer at “dark arts” during corner kicks.
