Following the gruesome massacre and mass abduction that recently rocked Borno State, the former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, has issued a high-stakes challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His message is clear: It is time to stop the declarations and start the “coordinated and sustainable” destruction of terrorist hideouts. The Senator representing Borno South expressed deep outrage on Sunday over the horrific killing of over 50 residents in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area—a massacre that claimed the lives of soldiers, a Chief Imam, and community elders. Senator Ndume revealed that the recent Ngoshe attack was a well-coordinated operation by insurgents utilizing known routes between the Mandara mountains, Sambisa Forest, and Lake Chad. To end this nightmare, Ndume is demanding that the Nigerian military launch consistent, non-stop clearance operations in these specific strongholds. “Government should walk its talk on emergency by engaging in coordinated and sustainable attacks on the targets,” Ndume stated, insisting that hideouts must be crushed once and for all. The Senator is pushing for a more transparent and direct approach from the Presidency. He urged President Tinubu to establish a situation room within the Presidential Villa to monitor the security crisis personally. Furthermore, he wants the President to bypass spokespersons and brief Nigerians directly from time to time on the progress being made to surmount banditry and insurgency across the North. Ndume also didn’t mince words regarding the financing of the war against terror. He criticized the current Nigerian Army budget, describing it as “insignificant” at less than 10 percent of the national budget. To fast-track the procurement of critical arms and ammunition, the former Senate Chief Whip is demanding that security agency budgets be front-loaded so soldiers on the front lines have exactly what they need to win.
