Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, was transformed into a battlefield on Saturday, March 7, 2026, as a fierce power struggle between the Seyi Makinde and Nyesom Wike factions of the PDP erupted into full-scale violence. What was meant to be a local government congress for the Wike-aligned faction turned into a “day of terror,” leaving at least 25 people injured and properties worth millions of naira in ruins. The most high-profile casualty of the mayhem was the residence of Barrister Hazim Gbolarumi, a former Deputy Governor of the state and a key ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Reports indicate that armed thugs descended on his Bodija home in Ibadan North, vandalizing the building and destroying several luxury vehicles parked on the premises. Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, Chairman of the Wike-led PDP faction, confirmed the coordinated attacks, describing a scene of total pandemonium. “Thugs are moving round to unleash terror on the people… More than 25 vehicles have been reported damaged. They are attacking individuals at home,” Akinoso warned, suggesting the casualty count and property damage could rise. Despite the blood and broken glass, the Oyo State Police Command has described the violence as an “internal affair” of the PDP. The Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, clarified that the attacks did not happen at the actual congress venues but in private residences and on the streets. She confirmed that the Commissioner of Police (CP) has ordered the immediate arrest of the hoodlums. The violence is the latest explosion in a long-running feud for the “soul of the party” in Oyo State: With the PDP National Headquarters still sealed by police and the courts yet to give a final verdict, the streets of Ibadan are paying the price for the party’s internal war.
