LAGOS – The dream of an immediate title defense is on hold for Nigeria’s Super Falcons. Following the shock postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the national team camp has been officially dissolved, with players ordered to return to their respective clubs. The Justine Madugu-led squad returned to Nigeria on Wednesday after a successful high-stakes friendly series against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in Yaoundé. The original plan was a quick turnaround, with the team scheduled to fly directly to Morocco for a final training camp ahead of the March 17 kickoff. However, with the tournament now shifted to July 2026, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has released the players to avoid unnecessary camping costs and allow them to focus on their domestic and European club duties. The Super Falcons were in fine form, coming off a 3-1 victory over Cameroon in their most recent friendly. Players like Michelle Alozie, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Rinsola Babajide (who has been vocal about her frustration with the delay) will now have to maintain their fitness levels for another four months before the continental showpiece begins. “The majority of the qualified teams had already started preparations. Dispersing now after building such momentum is a setback for any coach,” a team source noted.
