IBADAN — A wave of grief swept through the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Friday as a 52-year-old driver, Mumini Bello, was docked for allegedly crushing two siblings to death while they were asleep. The tragedy, which has thrown the Oke Ibadan Estate, Iyana Church area of the Oyo State capital into mourning, involved an eight-year-old girl, Inioluwa Oladimeji, and her younger brother, Obaloluwa Oladimeji. The police prosecutor, Mr. Elisha Tellang, told the court that the horrific incident occurred on January 3, 2026. According to the charge sheet, Bello was driving a Toyota Tacoma van recklessly on the highway when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The van reportedly veered off the road and smashed into a residential building where the victims were sleeping, crushing the two children to death on the spot. Tellang further revealed that the out-of-control vehicle also struck a 15-year-old passerby, Olalekan Quweel, leaving him with severe injuries. Bello, whose residential address was not provided, faces a four-count charge bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter. The prosecutor argued that the offences contravened Section 3(1) of the Reckless and Dangerous Driving Act of Oyo State, 2000, and Section 18 of the Road Traffic Act of Oyo State, 2000. However, when the charges were read, the defendant pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mrs. Moyosore Atanda, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. She subsequently adjourned the case until March 10, 2026, for a hearing.
