PORT HARCOURT — If no be “Village People” at work, how do you explain a Police Inspector waking up, carrying his service rifle, and facing his own colleagues to fire?

That is the question on everyone’s lips in Rivers State following a shocking tragedy on Sunday afternoon. Chaos erupted at the popular Next Cash and Carry Supermart in Port Harcourt when an officer, Inspector Victor Okus, seemingly “lost it” and gunned down two of his team members.

The incident happened around 1:20 p.m. It was supposed to be a normal Sunday duty. The officers were on joint guard duty with military personnel, securing the supermarket.

According to reports, Inspector Okus, who is usually based at Intels, Onne, but was on special duty, suddenly turned his gun on Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda.

He didn’t shoot them in the leg or hand o; police report says he allegedly aimed for the “head and neck regions.” Pure wickedness!

The sound of gunshots sent people running for cover. When the dust settled, Inspector Sani lay dead. Inspector Dauda was rushed to Nopsam Hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life.

The suspect, Inspector Okus, was immediately disarmed and arrested. He is currently cooling off in a cell, probably wondering what came over him.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, is not finding this matter funny at all. He has ordered a “thorough and transparent” investigation.

The CP has directed that the suspect must face an Orderly Room Trial immediately, followed by prosecution in court. He warned officers that carrying a gun is a serious responsibility, not for playing games or settling personal scores.

“It is crucial to prioritise your safety and the safety of others so as to prevent potential tragedies,” the CP warned.

The Rivers State Command has sent condolences to the family of the dead officer. But for the rest of us, the question remains: Wetin dey worry these officers?
