Currently, 974 Nigerians are in Canada’s “removal-in-progress” queue, where deportation processes have started but are not yet finished.
Between January and October 2025, Canadian authorities deported 366 Nigerians, with about 83% being failed refugee claimants and around 4% due to criminality. According to Canadian law, individuals with enforceable removal orders must leave the country.
Canada remains a significant destination for Nigerians, with over 71,000 obtaining Canadian citizenship from 2005 to 2024. Data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) shows Nigeria is the only African country in the top 10 nationalities deported in 2025, ranking ninth and fifth among those currently awaiting removal. This marks a notable increase, as Nigeria was absent from the top 10 deportation lists in 2023 and 2024.
