Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Thursday expressed grave concern over the continued abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to expedite efforts towards securing their release. The group lamented that about 50 days after the incident, the victims remain in captivity, describing the situation as a painful and avoidable trauma for the affected families and the nation. The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, with delegates from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara and Kogi states in attendance. The meeting, presided over by Oba of Ilu Abo in Ondo State, HRM. Oba Olu Falae sympathised with the families of the victims and the Oyo State Government, insisting that urgent action must be taken to rescue the abductees without further delay. Afenifere also threw its weight behind the proposed establishment of state police, commending the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for forwarding the bill to the National Assembly. The organisation, however, argued that some provisions of the proposed legislation still retain excessive federal control, stressing that genuine state policing can only be achieved if policing is placed on the Concurrent Legislative List. It further urged governors in all Yoruba-speaking states, including Kwara and Kogi, to adopt stronger measures against rising insecurity, warning that criminal activities in parts of the region now threaten free movement, farming and economic development. On the reported invasion of hostels belonging to Osun State University by alleged army recruits, Afenifere expressed shock, describing the incident as deeply disturbing and incompatible with the values expected of those being trained to defend the country. The body welcomed the arrest of some suspects and called for a comprehensive investigation, maintaining that anyone found culpable should face appropriate sanctions to prevent a recurrence. As preparations for the 2027 general election intensify, Afenifere warned politicians against violence, thuggery and inflammatory rhetoric capable of undermining democratic processes. The organisation maintained that electioneering campaigns must be conducted peacefully and devoid of acts capable of causing loss of lives or creating unnecessary political tension. While commending the sacrifices of military personnel and other security agencies in the fight against insecurity, the group called for improved welfare, better equipment and enhanced intelligence gathering. It also urged authorities to identify collaborators aiding criminal activities, including those allegedly linked to illegal mining operations in communities displaced by bandits. Reiterating its long-standing demand for restructuring, Afenifere stated that although it recognises ongoing reforms under President Tinubu, deeper constitutional changes remain necessary to place Nigeria on the path of true federalism, sustainable development and lasting security. The organisation equally mourned the death of Dr Femi Balogun, former secretary of its Ekiti State chapter, describing him as a committed and diligent member whose service to the Yoruba cause would be remembered. The communiqué was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi.
