United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has officially resigned from his position as both the country’s premier and the leader of the ruling Labour Party.

Starmer made the shocking announcement on Monday outside 10 Downing Street, maintaining that his time in office was strictly guided by what he believed was best for the nation.

Addressing the public during his resignation speech, he stated, “Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first.”

The outgoing Prime Minister confirmed that he had formally informed King Charles III of his decision to step down. Following this development, he has directed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to immediately commence the process of electing a new leader to pilot the affairs of the party and the country.

Nominations for the leadership position are scheduled to open on July 9, with the entire transition expected to be concluded before the parliament resumes sitting in September.

To prevent a leadership vacuum, Starmer noted that he would remain in office in a temporary capacity to oversee a smooth and seamless handover of power to his eventual successor.

His sudden resignation comes on the heels of growing internal pressure from within the Labour Party ranks. The political tension reportedly peaked following a major by-election victory by rival Andy Burnham in North West England, a development that triggered intensified calls for a swift change in leadership ahead of the parliament’s return.
