In a definitive legal resolution that has sent shockwaves through the country’s political landscape, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has unanimously dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki Group challenging the legitimacy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership structure. The three-member panel of the appellate court threw out the suit for lacking in merit, effectively affirming the earlier judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Ibadan. By this landmark unanimous decision, the Appeal Court has legally validated the Abdulrahman-led PDP Caretaker Committee, which superintended over the party’s historic National Convention where the current members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were duly elected. The legal battle, which had kept the main opposition party on its toes and fueled months of intense internal friction, sought to completely invalidate the mandate of the current national leadership. The Turaki Group had approached the appellate court aiming to upturn the Ibadan Federal High Court ruling that initially gave legal backing to the Abdulrahman committee’s actions. However, in the lead judgment, the justices ruled that the lower court was entirely right in its findings, declaring that the processes leading to the National Convention complied strictly with the party’s constitution and valid guidelines. The court further held that the grievances brought forward by the appellant group failed to establish any substantial miscarriage of justice to warrant a reversal of the judgment. Legal practitioners and political analysts monitoring the development at the court premises on Wednesday described the verdict as a total validation of the NWC’s authority and a massive relief for the party’s hierarchy, which had been bogged down by leadership litigations. With this final legal hurdle cleared by the Abuja Court of Appeal, the Abdulrahman-led faction has successfully secured the political future of the current NWC, effectively putting an end to the factional disputes threatening the stability of the PDP ahead of upcoming political engagements. As at the time of filing this report, leaders of the Turaki Group have not released an official statement on whether they intend to test the judgment at the Supreme Court, while loyalists of the mainstream PDP leadership have thrown themselves into celebration over the judicial victory.
